Scripture Resource Passage: Luke 5:16

Isolated and alone. Panic? Or, just possibly a decisive spiritual intervention. Twelve hours without vibrating vocal cords. Feels like…

No visitors. Deliberate withdrawal from personal contact probably feels strange to most disciples.

No shopping. Food and clothing needs maintained as normal, lest a growling stomach distract from the day’s purpose.

Alone. No. This is not the title of a television series on the History channel. Devoid of companionship is hard won. The word is solitude.

Purposeful. A goal in mind.

Intentional. A deep and hopeful conviction that holy value resides within these moments.

Spiritual. Combining all life’s aspects including body, mind and will, I am fully present. Yes, spiritual.

“If we become silent, we step out of the hectic tangle of our relationships…Without others, we don’t have a community or an identity, but sometimes we need to step back and stand still to contemplate our relationships to other people. And to God, who is most of the time a silent God, a God who doesn’t shout but whispers – a whisper we can’t hear until we silence all other sounds. Frank Mulder
