Scripture Resource Passages: Isaiah 1 and Psalm 82

George made the assertion, Marjorie hesitated. He said, “I believe justice resides at the very heart of life. It’s as much a part of our world as earth, air, fire and water.”

            Marjorie replied, “If that’s true, then justice is part of God’s work and not a human invention.” 

            George shook his head side-to-side, raising his eyebrows and finally said, “Well, I’m okay if you want to say it that way.”

            Disciples of Jesus believe justice begins in the wisdom God. “Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked” (Psalm 82:3-4 NIV).

            Christians hold to the principle that justice is more than a humanly devised political creation. Human cities, states and nations did not create justice. 

            Marjorie reignited her conversation with George, pointing to a Scripture passage which helped her understand a disciple’s responsibility. 

            “George, check out this passage. “Wash and make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of my sight; stop doing wrong. Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow” (Isaiah 1:17 NIV).

            She explained, “This helps me focus on being involved, yes, politically involved in my community to help those in need. The fact of seeking to live in God’s image as a person who encourages justice means I accept personal responsibility.”

2. Are disciples of Jesus correct if they believe justice is more than an isolated issue between themselves and God?
